Angry Robot keeps cars captive in Hoboken

Here in The Garage, we just love seeing new technology. It’s even better when that new tech screws up. What may be even better than that is when the humans in control of the tech screw up.

It seems that Hoboken, New Jersey is miles ahead of most towns. They have one of them newfangled robotic parking garages. The only problem is that robots don’t work when their software license expires!

That’s what happened when the city had a contract dispute with Robotic Parking, the owners of the software. Hoboken Police escorted Robotic employees off the property. Employees took manuals and software info with them. City officials must not have understood that the cancellation of the contract also ended their license to use the software. Just like the updates that stop when your virus software license expires, the robot just stopped working. The garage was not designed to be operated manually, so hundreds of customers’ cars were trapped while the legal guys worked it all out.
