An American Woody

Following all the discussion about the Bedford Van in my New Year’s post, I thought maybe some photos of some of my other toys might be in order. Until I find the suitcase containing most of them though, I’ll have to limit it to the ones that the fam includes with the little Christmas houses.

Like most of the older toys I have, this one belonged to my step father. I decided to do a little bit of research and I came across Flickr user The Brucer who has quite the collection of Dinky’s and has the full history of this particular model along with a photo of his pristine copy. The Dinky American Woody was built by Meccano in Liverpool. The Brucer gives a great description of the production run of his own version:

This diecast Dinky estate car (station wagon) was produced by Meccano Ltd. (Liverpool, UK) between 1950 and 1960. The estate car was originally numbered Dinky #27F; the number was changed to #344 in 1953-54. The number 344 is stamped on the baseplate of the car shown in this photo, demonstrating that it was produced after the numbering change.

You will notice that on mine, there does not appear to be any model number stamped on the bottom. I’m not sure if this gives any indication of when it was made. Also, mine shows a fair bit of “love marks” and a tiny bit of rust.

Anybody have any ideas what year this one was built?

No idea as to actual year but due to lack of # probably an early one. I also seem to remember that ‘Meccano’ was dropped from later ones.
I did have one of these.

I have one “Brand New” in an unopened box. It was bought by a friend of ours for their son’s birthday. They forgot to give it to him and 20 years later they gave it to me for our son’s birthday. It got lost in a move 20 years ago and was only just found about a month ago.
E-bay…here it comes:-)

The Woodie was the first Dinky I had. Fond memories of it. Thanks for reminding me of it.
