August 8, 2011. David Thorndyke and the #67 Thorsons EVT Chevrolet team had plenty of action at round number eight of the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire series at the Grand Prix of Trois Rivieres. In addition to the other drivers Thorndyke would have to maintain his composure during the rain showers that added an extra challenge to the day.
Conditions were perfect during practice and qualifying on Saturday afternoon. Thorndyke and the #67 Thorsons EVT Chevrolet team worked to improve the handling of the car. “It was a pretty smooth session for us†said the driver. “We didn’t race at this event last year I just wanted to get comfortable in the car at this track†he added.
Shortly before the scheduled start of Sunday’s feature race at the Grand Prix of Trois Rivieres rain showers soaked the track leaving everyone wondering what lay ahead. It turns out you also needed to worry about what’s behind you.
At the beginning of the race Thorndyke proceeded very gently in the #67 Thorsons EVT Chevrolet. “We started deep in the field and I wanted to make sure to get through the first couple of corners†said the driver. “It was smarter to give up a little space and be able to go around any trouble ahead†he stated.
Most drivers used their head and proceeded cautiously in the difficult conditions. However the #67 Thorsons EVT Chevrolet would receive a bump from behind by the #84 car. The contact would send them both spinning. “It was pretty frustrating†said Thorndyke. “We know we’re not the fastest car but I always give everyone plenty of racing room and that hit was avoidable†he explained.
Despite the setback Thorndyke would gather the car up and return to the fight. A consistent and smart drive to the end would see him pick up six positions from the start of the race. “It was quite an experience to race in such tough conditions and I’m glad we made it to the end.
Following the race inspection of the damage incurred from the contact showed it wasn’t too severe. “Fortunately there’s no steering damage or anything too severe that will prevent us from being ready for Montreal†said Crew Chief Adam Thorndyke.
David Thorndyke and the EVT Chevrolet team are next scheduled to race August 19-20 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec as part of the Nationwide weekend.
