Team press release
(Bomanville, Ontario) July 27th 2011 – After a dominant performance leading the way through each official practice session, qualifying on pole position and setting a new lap record. Canada’s Kyle Marcelli, driver of the #89 Intersport Racing entry was forced into an early retirement at the Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport after a spinning GTC car made contact with Marcelli in turn 3.
The talented 21- year old race driver from Barrie, Ontario was the man to beat all weekend. After setting the pace leading in each official practice session, Marcelli made the record books Saturday afternoon as he qualified the #89 LMPC on pole position with a time of 1:11.331 – a new lap record. Mexico’s Luis Diaz was the previous record holder.
The Intersport Racing team opted for Marcelli’s co-driver Chapman Ducote of Miami Beach, Florida to start the 2h 45m race. Chapman drove a consistent and clean first stint running 3rd in class before a full course caution at the 41-minute mark of the race. With the rules of the American Le Mans Series requiring each driver to drive a minimum of 45 minutes, the Intersport team had to wait until the final lap of caution before getting Marcelli into the car.
As Marcelli raced out of the pits he was immediately on a mounting charge to the front setting the fastest last of the race. Racing hard on the bumper of 2nd place, which was the Intersport Racing sister car driven by Jon Field, a spinning GTC Porche in turn 3 made contact with the right rear of Marcelli causing suspension damage and ending the local hero’s race.
“It’s unfortunate and heart breaking yet these things happen when racing at the limit. We showed our dominance throughout the weekend and the Intersport Racing team should give themselves a pat on the back for their hard work and efforts. All we can do is put our head down and race to win at the next round in Ohio.†Said Kyle Marcelli
