Vic Elford with historic Porsche 907

January 30, 2010 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

Legendary is a word you are going to see a lot here in The Garage over the next 30 hours or so. Earlier today we heard from Hurley Haywood. The man in the photo above is Vic Elford. Vic scored Porsche’s first win at Daytona in 1968 behind the wheel of this long tail Porsche 907.

Elford has a fabulous gallery of photos of his career on his web site, including many prints that he sells signed for quite reasonable prices.

After the break, we’ve got a shot of the famous 1968 Daytona finish.

With icier roads than anybody has seen in North American rallying, the 2010 edition was expected to provide surprises and excitement. If Day 1 was any indication, than the entire event will live up to expectations.

“It’s like a luge course at the Olympics out here at Sno*Drift…. bumpers and car parts all over the stages. And it’s only stage 4!”

Wow!

Nut and bolt checks

January 29, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

As Gary Faules will tell you, the key to winning endurance races is preparation. Part of that preparation means making sure absolutely every nut and bolt is secure before the car heads out on track. The Bullet Racing crew will use some of their free time (if you can call it that) tonight making final checks to be sure the car is ready to go tomorrow.

How do you drive on ice?

January 29, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

Very carefully!

Earlier this evening we saw some of the top crews at SnoDrift discussing the perils of driving on ice. Afterwards the cameras went out to the start of the shakedown stage and spoke with some of the drivers. While they all had something to say, it is clear that all the drivers are more than a little bit nervous about today’s event. You only have to watch Pastrana, ACP and Mirra attempt to leave the starting line to know that these guys are going to have the toughest drive of their lives today.

As we get news from tonight’s stages we’ll keep you informed.

Bullet Racing is racing for the kids

January 29, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

As we’ve been following Bullet Racing through the first couple of days leading up to the Rolex 24 at Daytona, we’ve been focusing on the team and the car. As the team is resting up for the start tomorrow, I thought that maybe we should talk a bit about the cause the team is racing for.

Bullet Racing is not only an all Canadian team, it is an all volunteer team, world class drivers included. Team owner Steve Paquette is footing the bills and the team is hard at work chasing down donations for the BC Children’s Hospital. Every penny donated will go to this hospital that cares for a million sick and injured kids in British Columbia and the Yukon. Not only are they the underdog privateer team, they are also working hard to support an important charity.

Visit BulletRacing.ca to donate. You’ll find the link at the top left.

Read the team’s full press release after the break and be sure to visit The Garage often over the weekend as we keep you up to date on the team’s progress during the race.

Top rally crews on how they deal with icy conditions

January 29, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

This year’s SnoDrift Rally has served up roads that look more like a hockey rink than a forest road. Couple that with the complete lack of snow in the ditches and you have some very challenging (not to mention dangerous) conditions. Rally America interviewers spoke with Antoine L’Estage, Nat Richard, Alex Gelsemino, Ken Block and others about their strategy for dealing with the ice.

Those of you who would rather see the dirty bits rather than just static photos and action video are going to love this video of Ken Block’s Monster Fiesta during tech inspection for the SnoDrift Rally. Great to see the old guy getting schooled on rally car prep by a lady!

Ken Block runs Ford Fiesta to flat in 6th on sheer ice

January 29, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

Lest ye think that Daytona is the only game in town this weekend, let me remind you that the SnoDrift Rally is also on tap. Fortunately for the rally community, much attention is being brought to this first big event of the season thanks to Ken Block and the Monster World Rally Ford Fiesta.

After the break we’ve got the first video of Block’s new steed in action. This footage was shot during yesterday’s shake down stage. The Michigan roads have lots of long straights, not to mention 4 legged obstacles. There are a few sections where Block is running flat in 6th for ages, with a top speed of 110 miles per hour. Don’t think that’s fast? Remember that this is on ice and then watch the bumper cam segments again. This is just crazy!
