Way back in history (60 and early 70's) wagons, usually used, were the most popular tow vehichles for the amatuer racer and some pros. You could stow a lot of stuff in them and often doubled as a motel. Mine did.
Then came the vans and wagons lost their appeal.

Funny, as I was reading the post, I began wondering about the Dodge Magnum, and why it failed, only to see Gary F talk up...his Magnum.
No, the wagon is not dead. The CTS, and A4 Avant are proof you can haul your family and all that goes with it and still look good. I also think the Saab 9-3 SportCombi looks better than the sedan. And don't forget the VW Jetta SportWagen, and the upcoming Acura TSX Sportwagon.
Between SUVs, CUVs, and minivans, the wagon will never dominate in North America like it did up to the 70's, but there are choices out there for those who find a wagon appealing.

My wife loved SUV's and to tell the truth I enjoyed them especially for road trips with the family yet I cringed knowing my wife used them for everything from mall shoping or going to get her nails done. But when Dodge came out with the Magnum I jumped on it. Now that it has a lot of miles on it I can honestly say we LOVE having a station wagon and the savings in fuel alone paid for it. I hope wagons make a big comeback and I feel if the big three made a compact wagon like the old Datsun days. it would be a serious hit.

I agree with your kids and yet-the-desire-for-class target audience; the CTS Sport Wagon has the same suspension, engines, and only a bit more weight than the Sedan.

Without kids but with stuff to haul seems like a good fit for the CTS Sport Wagon also. Lots of people just need more room for stuff; Scuba Divers come to mind, or Caterers, or Realitors, with yard signs in the back. People who need more room but still want that CTS flair.

I think wagons also attract people who want the ULTIMATE sleeper, but we'll have to wait and see if Cadillac releases V-series Goodness in Sport Wagon form as they keep hinting they might. This is the OMG it's a wagon AND it hauls argument that many seem to find so attractive.
