Just as the Toronto Grand Prix became a casualty of the final battle before the IRL/CCWS reunion, the home town boy may sit out the 08 season as well. TSN has reported that long time Champ Car team owner Gerald Forsythe has decided to call it a day for the format. Forsythe Racing Inc will apparently continue with their involvement with the Formula Atlantic series, ensuring that fellow Canuck James Hinchcliffe will keep his ride.
Whether Forsythe was fed up with the flip flopping, or not happy with the final terms of the reunification is not clear. Nor is it clear as to how the remaining 4 years of driver Paul Tracy’s 5 year contract will be dealt with.
Perhaps PT would like to come up to Mosport and run in the Arrive & Drive series!
Darwin Head of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan won $1 million last night in Vancouver in between periods of a game between the Canucks and the Avalanche. His feat: He shot 15 pucks — the exact amount he needed — into an empty net from the far blue line in just 24 seconds but not only did he walk away with $1 million bucks he and his buddies each won a Chevy Malibu Hybrid to boot. What do you think Aye?

Well folks, I guess the two week cycle for the CoW is going to be more of a guideline, as I just can’t find the time to sit down and do this much reading in one sitting. I’ve got a couple of free hours this afternoon, so grab me yourself a cold one and let’s strap in and take a hot lap around the auto blogs.
First up, as we’ve done so many times, we have Brian from RaceDriven, who has a bunch of suggestions for the bigwigs at NASCAR. Hellooooo….anybody listening? Mr. V has some good ideas!

It is finally official, the IRL & CCWS are one. The way it should have always been. Sour grapes of the past aside though, as Karl Kalkhoven said: “Now is not the time to look back”
Greg MacPherson from Inside Track live blogged the press conference yesterday and has some great insight.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Car-building legend Boyd Coddington, whose testosterone-injected cable TV reality show “American Hot Rod” introduced the nation to the West Coast hot rod guru, has died. He was 63.
Coddington died at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in suburban Whittier at 6:20 a.m. Wednesday. His La Habra office spokeswoman Amanda Curry wouldn’t disclose the cause of death.
Coddington, who started building cars when he was 13 and once operated a gas station in Utah, set a standard for his workmanship and creativity, with his popular “Cadzilla” creation considered a design masterpiece. The customized car based on a 1950s Cadillac was built for rocker Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top.
“That was a groundbreaking car. Very cool,” said Dick Messer, executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

Blues Brothers. Panned by critics, loved by millions. So who is right? What makes the critics opinion more valid than the consumer? Veteran Canadian auto writer, new to auto blogging, Jil McIntosh warns consumers that it is good to be critical of the critics. In other words, trust your butt over theirs.
So what gives? Why is this warrior of the press fleets telling readers to take our writings with a grain of salt? Because unlike many of our counterparts in the industry, Jil is very accessible to the public and still remembers that consumers actually buy cars based on so called journalists recommendations. I’ll take this one step further and say that many of todays motoring writers are journalism school grads who have little or no expertise in the automotive world. In other words, they don’t have a clue in hell what they are talking about, nor do they have any business advising people on the 2nd most expensive item they will purchase in their lifetime. The problem is even worse in my domain, the online world, where anyone can claim to be an expert.
Fighting words those!

Sad news has reached The Garage that long time racer, automotive writer and engineer Paul Frere has passed away at the age of 91. He had been injured in a crash while testing for Road & Track and while he recovered from his injuries, he was never quite the same. Frere began his racing career on two wheels following World War 2, moving to cars a short time later. In 1952, Frere took part in his first Grand Prix and would go on to race 11 times in the pinnacle of motorsports. Perhaps the highlight of his career as a driver was in 1960 when he won Le Mans, co-driving with Olivier Gendebien. Perhaps Frere’s biggest accomplishment was his journalistic career, through which he was able to touch millions of enthusiasts with his experience and insight.
A couple of months before his crash, friend of The Garage Alois Ruf had told tales of driving with Frere. Alois said that Paul was a bit unstable on his feet, but that even at 90 he was more agile than most 20 year olds behind the wheel.
We have lost another great one.
