The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano borrows its name from the test track where Ferrari tests both its road cars and Formula 1 race cars, and it was designed to bring F1 to the streets. It replaced the 575 M Maranello. The powerplant is a front/mid-mounted V-12 rated at 620 horsepower. You can buy one today for around $270,000.
If your dream bubble just burst because $270,000 would be like five years worth of salary, you can still have a 559 for the amazing price of $5,368. Well maybe not so amazing, and maybe damn expensive for what you get. Continue reading →
The Indianapolis 500 has lost most of its storied luster, but some excitement is still generated by marketeers eager to align with the historic value of the event.
On Memorial Day weekend in 2008, General Motors is taking their ethanol promotional campaign to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. For the tenth time, a Chevrolet Corvette will be leading the open wheel field around the track for the Indy 500. Continue reading →
For weeks now, Ittai Geiger has been promoting the living daylights out of his upcoming video. The guy has posted a rambling video of himself and then a InnamorAuto trailer to just about every automotive Facebook group in existence. The finished product had better be pretty good or he will have ticked off a bunch of people!
Great news for Ittai and his co-horts Jared Silver and Scott Gross. Their finished product is outstanding! It is funny, informative and visual eye candy, with all sorts of artistic effects in use to bring the little Lotus to life on the small screen. Nice job guys!
A few weeks back we gave you a glimpse of what the new Mazda Furai concept looked like. Now that leaked photo has turned into a full blown image.
The Mazda Furai actually made a couple of hot laps around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca piloted by ALMS ace Jamie Bach, where this photo was taken. Continue reading →
You have to admire the fact that Kia chose a few months back to begin publishing a blog to it’s English speaking customers. Unlike some other corporate blogs that are written by the professional spin doctors, Kia’s BUZZ blog is written by employees, complete with the occasional translational gaff. I love it! It’s a sad day in Serbia, it’s a sad day for Yugo devotees the world over. Serbia’s only carmaker and producer of the much-maligned Yugo will be sold next year, the government announced yesterday.
Zastaya, the company which produced the Yugo, will be in final lockdown by April.
Introduced to U.S. buyers in 1985 at a price of $3,990 the Yugoslavian-built Yugo sounded like a bargain. It was, by far, the cheapest new car you could get. But the Yugo’s reputation for poor quality garnered some scathing reviews including the classic Consumer Reports, review calling the car “hard to recommend at any price” and concluded that “you’d be better off buying a good used car than a new Yugo.” Continue reading →
I love Kevin Kelly’s Street Use blog, as he comes out with some of the coolest automotive hacks. This time it’s an old stake truck converted to a barge with the use of steel drums, with the propeller being powered by the truck’s engine. It’s use? Why ferrying Cubans to Miami of course.
One of the most titanic battles since Godzilla vs. Mothra is about to unfold in Japan. Honda might have been on top in sending the Insight, the first gas-electric hybrid to the U.S. back in 1999, but the Prius evolved into the undisputed King of Green.Honda, still doing the slow burn from being left at the starting gate, has decided to do battle and try to make a monster move against Toyota.
Company president Takeo Fukai says Honda is investing heavily in hybrids and insists the battle “has just begun.” The technology’s first phase was all about cultivating a green image, Fukui says. The next phase will emphasize making the vehicles more affordable and fuel efficient, he says, and Honda has two cars in the pipeline that he promises will challenge Toyota’s clean and green supremacy. Prior to picking up our 08 Jeep Liberty tester, I had spent 2 weeks driving a pair of Mopars that each boasted over 300 horsepower. In other words, I was on a bit of a horsepower high. As a result, my initial impression was that the Liberty was woefully under powered.
That really wasn’t a fair assessment, as the Liberty is a well appointed family hauler that is a capable off roader, not a luxo speed wagon. Once I got over my initial power shock, I quickly fell in love with the Liberty. With 210 horsepower, the 3.7 liter V6 pushes the Liberty along at an acceptable rate for most drivers. The V6 muscles out 235 ft/lbs of torque, which combines with the off road suspension to allow for a 5000 pound tow rating. This should be more than enough for most the weekend warrior who wants to tow a couple of snowmobiles or a light race car. Continue reading →
While some of our friends and family are enjoying the warmer climes to the south, here in Ontario it is still pretty chilly. For many racers, this isn’t a time of frustration. Rather, it’s time for a different type of racing. Ice racing.
Regular readers will have come across the odd photo or video of Darth Viper in The Garage over the past year. During the winter, Nick Majors abandons the snake in favor of a turbo powered Nissan and heads north to the track at the Minden Fairgrounds. This video shows the view from the windshield of the 2007 Ontario Stud Champion!
Somehow it wouldn’t surprise me if Nick puts that on his business cards!
