You can only tempt death so long

evel1.jpg

All of us dodge bullets, some more than others but even driving to the grocery store can be met with uncertainties and the bottom line is we never know when our time will come.

I just received a phone call from one of my friends asking me, “Did you hear? Evel Knievel died.” As soon as the lump in my throat left I asked what happened. According to the news report he had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs and Evil had passed away.

Just like every other kid having grown up in the 60’s I idolized Evel Knievel and all his stunts and he was the epitome of in your face, rebellious and I can do what I want, daredevil. In the 70’s his cockiness got him his own movie which really told it the way it was.

Ferrari says no going from Red to Green

shumacher.jpg

The 430 Ferrari Scuderia was officially unveiled, to much fanfare, by Michael Schumacher at the IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt back in September.

Ferrari was quick to point out that its fastest production car ever showed great achievement in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. But before those who want to green the auto industry worldwide start wearing red, they better think again if they feel Ferrari will ever go the hybrid route.

First annual Holiday Gift Giving Guide

int39red01.jpg

It always amuses me when Mrs. G says that I’m too hard to buy Christmas presents for. Let’s face it, more than just a car guy, I’m a guy. I’m easily pleased and absolutely anything related to cars will make me happy. Heck, I would be tickled pink to wake up on the morning of the 25th to a box of Hot Wheels!

So for all those spouses who don’t know what to buy your car geek, The Garage is offering our 1st Annual Holiday Gift Guide. For the next two weeks, we’ll have a gift idea a day to help you fill that space under the tree.

To kick things off, I have to thank Gary Faules for directing me towards Plan59. This Fairfax, Virginia based company is dedicated to mid-century American commercial art. They have an absolutely incredible assortment of advertising and that includes a stunning array of automotive creations.

The Great Divide

J.D. Power and Associates just came out with some interesting data. It appears that the line is drawn in the sand when it comes to import VS domestic purchases based on age.

From the information released in the fifth edition of the Avoider Study, the figurers shows that older buyers who purchase domestic vehicles are more likely to avoid purchasing certain models because they are imports…..

Those good ole days (Vintage Ads)

59-6.jpg

When I think about vintage adds I remember many of them from watching the single TV station we had when I was growing up on my parent’s ranch. The ones that seem to stand out after all these years were the Kodak commercials that were always on during the Wonderful World of Disney show and the Chevrolet commercials that were on during every Bonanza. Both of those shows appeared every Sunday night and back in those days watching a TV show was a family affair. (Boy have things changed.) How many of you remember the Chevrolet theme song sung by Dinah Shore?

See the USA in your Chevrolet
America is asking you to call
Drive your Chevrolet through the USA
America’s the greatest land of all

On a highway, or a road along the levy
Performance is sweeter, nothing can beat her
Life is completer in a Chevy

Miss Belvedere is moving on

miss-b.jpg

The story about Miss Belvedere, a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere that was recovered from it’s underground vault in Tulsa, Oklahoma generated quite the buzz here in The Garage and continues to draw new readers daily.

Unfortunately, Miss B wasn’t quite ready for the ball when she saw the light of day. In fact, she was looking more than a little bit hungover from her 50 year dirt nap. The time has come for the rusty car to go home with her new family and began the trek to New Jersey today. So what is to become of the old girl? Well, the family of Ray Humberston, the winner of the car, have no interest in restoring the car. Instead, they have teamed up with a chemical company who intend to clean the car up, remove as much rust as possible and stop the rest from progressing further. They even hope to get the engine running.

You can watch a interview with Humberston’s grandson at KOTV and follow the Miss B’s progress here.

A Torturous Drive in a Rolls-Royce

It’s very comforting to know that if you live in Communist China, get arrested for subversive activities, and are sent to the “Strictly Controlled Division” jail for a round of torture and reeducation, you can do it in style.

How about driving a Rolls to your date with destiny?

Helio wins, but will he get the girl?

helio.jpg

Here in home office of The Garage, we’ve been keeping half an eye on the recent season of Dancing With the Stars. For journalistic purposes. Really. How often does one get to watch an Indy 500 winner shimmy with a smokin’ hot 19 year old while laying a beating on a Spice Girl and an Osmond?
