Some people like to look at cars, others, like to drive them. Some believe in a car’s character, for others, its a needy utility, an expense, a liability…
They don’t know what they are missing.
The Garage visits Good Guys Nationals in Nashville
July 26th, 2007 — Tags:autocross, car-show, good-guys-nationals, hotrod, nashville

One of the cool things about modern, old skool rods is that they are built to be driven. In some cases even flogged, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a rod running an autocross course! That was part of the scene though at the Good Guys Nationals a few weeks ago in Nashville. The Garage’s roving Nashvillian, Scott Simmons from the EditBlog was on the scene and scooped tons of pics. Everything from rat rods to modern muscle, 32 Fords to Ford GT’s and just about everything in between. Even a killer Short Bus.

Oh how things have changed. No more Pacers, no more Gremlins. No more racially motivated commentary in advertising! Here from youtube user WookieCookie is a 1974 AMC Gremlin ad. Actually it sounds more like an ad for extended warranties, but I was mesmerized by that fro.
World of Outlaws
July 26th, 2007 — Tags:oshweken, sprint-cars, world-of-outlaws
What in the heck are the World of Outlaws? In an automotive context, one might envision something with big horsepower, crazy drivers and a general lack of what some may think of as common sense. If this is what you were thinking, you’re not far off. The World of Outlaws is an oval track series whose competitors drive open wheel cars with big wings and roughly 700hp. Oh, and by the way, they run on a dirt track.
I’ve seen this automotive specatcle twice in my life, but both times the races took place south of the border in Ransomeville, NY, and both races were over a decade ago. Tonight this group of power crazy drivers square off at Oshweken Speedway in Brantford, Ontario. While Brantford is not exactly high on my list of ‘must visit’ places, you can bet I’ll be there. With any luck, I’ll be able to hear tomorrow and I won’t be covered in mud. For more info on the World of Outlaws, visit http://www.worldofoutlaws.com/sprint/

So things have been quiet here in The Garage today, because things in the real life garage were going crazy all day. For tonight, we’ve got some shots of the Speed GT series at the Steelback Grand Prix, taken during Friday evening practice.

Once again, Nobuhiro Tajima has come out on to on the race up Pikes Peak. This year, he screamed up the mountain at a record pace of 10 minutes, 1.408 seconds in his 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7 otherwise known as Escudo. To put things into perspective, the course is 12.42 miles of climb, with no less than 156 turns! Youtube user lozo78 has posted the following video, I’m sure there will be many more to follow.
Close the office door, crank up the speakers and hold onto your hat!

End of days at LA County Raceway
July 23rd, 2007 — Tags:burnout, don-garlits, hotrod, slicks, swamp-rat

For those readers who think we here at The Garage only go road racing, here’s one for you. As you might know, LA County Raceway is set to close after next weekend’s racing. Here at The Garage, we’re not about to let an event like that slide by unnoticed, so our man on the west coast Aaron Von Minden (posing as Aaron Von Fonda above) and his crew headed to the track last weekend for a few last passes.

Introducing: Andrew Lee
July 23rd, 2007 — Tags:blogging, drifting, tuner-car
First up on the new team roster is Andrew Lee. Andrew comes from a slightly different background than most of us here in The Garage to date. He quite literally grew up with the import tuner hobby and has seen everything that scene has to offer, both the good and the bad.
The street scene gave way to organizing track days and even working with the Toronto Grand Prix. Lately, the drifting bug has caught Andrew’s attention. Having been through an apprenticeship program, he’s even pretty handy with the wrenches.
Now, I suppose I can turn it over to Andrew to introduce himself! Welcome aboard, we are looking forward to seeing your spin on this crazy hobby.
