Pontiac to build Solstice Coupe

July 31, 2007 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

solstice-coupe-rear-view.jpg

The folks at GM are working hard to resurrect all of their brands within their respective niches. Pontiac hit a home run when they released the drop dead sexy Solstice roadster and now it looks like they have plans to build upon that model’s success. Way back in December, the internets got all fired up when Bob Lutz told the folks at Winding Road that a coupe version of the Solstice was in the works. In fact, at the time, Lutz went so far as to say “If we did it, it would look exactly like the Pontiac Solstice Coupe Concept Car that we had at the ’02 show. Remember it? The orange one.”

Mitsubishi to unveil Concept-cX at Frankfurt

Mitsubishi has released further details about the upcoming Concept-cX, their next generation SUV concept. The exterior of the Concept-cX shares strong corporate design cues at the front, where the hood and grill lines mimic the 2008 Lancer. The roofline is reminiscent of the current model Outlander. Elsewhere in the vehicle, Mitsubishi is showing their dedication towards building greener vehicles. The planned powerplant is a high efficiency 1.8 liter, high output, turbocharged diesel which is mated to Mitsubishi’s new twin clutch sport shift transmission. Perhaps the most eco friendly element is the interior plastic, which is quite literally, green. Made with plant based resins, Mitsubishi’s revolutionary plastic is intended to reduce impact on petroleum supplies.

Yet another great catch from Gary Faules. After winning the Speed GT race at the Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto, Gary’s buddy Randy Pobst puts on a bit of a show for the Toronto fans. The poor rev limiter is working overtime on this one.

Ok, so it’s not really Herbie’s wedding, but he was there for a visit. This fun 65 Beetle was at the site of the old Cullen Gardens for a wedding & the owner wasn’t around, so I can’t provide any details, but it looks cool.

Carnival of Wheels: Edition #31

As a young car enthusiast reading car magazines, I used to wonder what it would be like getting to meet all manner of special car people, just like the writers did. What a thrill it would be to meet artists, celebrities, racers and even race fans who shared my love of cars. Fast forward a few decades and here we are visiting the Carnival of Wheels. Each week, car bloggers and readers alike join up for a bit of an automotive love in. It just gets me all warm and fuzzy. Now that you’ve got that wonderful visual, strap in and hold on while we take a hot lap around the blogosphere.

Usually, we hear about brawling over at our brother blog 8 Feet, but lately there has been a bunch of dust-ups in the racing world, both on and off track. In ALMS, an on track battle has been brewing all season between Mika Salo and Tomas Enge with the cars acting as hockey gloves. The series penalties weren’t enough to deter these guys and as Brian from RaceDriven points out, the team has taken things into their own hands. On the topic of Formula 1, Brian has a few words about last week’s activities. It’s hard to say what was more soggy, the European GP or the court proceedings.

The crew from The Garage really are all over the place this summer. The ruffian above is Gary Faules, turning himself in at the Good Guys 14th Summer Get Together a few weeks ago at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, California. Ever the good crew member, Gary has put together a gallery of shots from the day.

Quality Control vs. The Accountants

July 28, 2007 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

It has long been considered a known truth that the Traditional Imports build better cars than the Traditional Domestics. To the casual observer, it would seem that the TD’s care less about their end product than the TI’s do. Is that really the case?

Over at AOL Autos this week Christopher Neiger spent some time with an incognito quality engineer who has worked for the TI’s and the TD’s. So what does he think? Do the TD’s care less about their end product? He says both the domestic and import car companies took pride in making quality-built vehicles, but also says there was a difference between the two companies he worked for.

So now we’ve seen Aaron’s coupe in stills and even with a starlet, but how about seeing the beast in action. It seems the young man has been holding out on us, as he’s had this video hiding in the gootoobz.

No, she’s not one of us! Look behind her. That’s Aaron Von Minden’s sweet blown Ford Coupe that went to the track last weekend, on the cover of Garage Magazine and it’s the centerfold car too! The mag just hit the stands, so I would assume us Canadians will likely see it some time next week.

Nice job Aaron!
