2007 VARAC Festival: A day well spent!

March 711-6 as raced by Ronnie Peterson

846 photos and a sunburn. I don’t have a clue where to begin. Do I write or do I edit photos. It’s going to take days, maybe even weeks to tell all the stories and edit all the images. For now, it’s time for bed and one quick story.

I watched a Formula 1 race at Mosport today. Now if that in itself wasn’t cool enough, the company I watched it with made it almost surreal. I finished my day by watching a Formula 1 race with 2005 Canadian rally champion Peter Thomson, 1981 Canadian rally champion Randy Black and none other than legendary Canadian F1 team owner and constructor Walter Wolf!

Quote of the day goes to Mr. Wolf. “The last time I watched my cars race, they won”

Heading to the VARAC festival

The 2007 VARAC Festival at at Mosport, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Grand Prix got under way yesterday, under sunny skies. Today has dawned sunny as well, so I’m about to slap on some sunscreen and hit the road. If you are in Southern Ontario, you should do the same, as there is going to be some great racing!

We spoke with artist Paul Chenard last night and he had a busy day peddling his wonderful creations, so we are pretty excited for him.

The photo above is from the 2006 festival. This year, we are armed with our new camera and a couple of empty SD cards, so plan to see a ton of photos over the next few days.

In The Garage: 1991 Mitsubishi Jeep

mitsu-jeep-7.jpg

When you spend your day in a new car dealership, it’s not often you see any really different vehicles. So today, when Vijay Parany from JDM Cars arrived in a 1991 Mitsubishi Jeep, we all noticed.

Now many of you will say, as I did that Mitsubishi and Jeep have nothing to do with each other. You would be wrong. I was too.

pajero.jpg

Responding to global concerns over traditional petroleum based fuel shortages, Mitsubishi has reworked the popular Pajero to run on gasoline, ethanol or a mixture. The new model, called the Pajero TR4 Flex will be released in Brazil next month. This is the first flex fuel 4×4 in that market. The vehicle could be a taste of what Mitsubishi plans to bring to the US market as soon as 2009. let’s hope the Pajero makes it’s way to Canada too.

With street racing related deaths on the rise across North America, governments and police forces are having to try new and drastic measures to combat the illegal and dangerous activity. Kubica sustained 75 G’s during Montreal crash

kubica-crash.jpg

Yes, you read that right. The point of impact during Robert Kubica’s 180 mph crash during the Canadian Grand Prix registered a whopping 75 G’s. This with only a slight concussion and a sprained ankle.

Not only is modern car design a marvel, but Kubica owes a serious debt to the gods of luck!

Spotted: Mini Clubman testing nearly nude

mini_clubman_01.jpg

Spy shooter Chris Schotanus captured a number of shots of the upcoming Mini Clubman testing en masse. The shots are pretty clear and show vertical split rear doors, just like the original and a right side rear door. Also visible is a very large sunroof.

We can’t wait to get our hands on one of these babies and it won’t be too long, as the car is set to debut in Frankfurt in September.

Catholics Beware! Thou Shall Not Commit Road Rage

popemobile.jpg

Not only doe the Vatican want you to refrain from using a johnny cap, but now they seem to have plans for saving the world from road rage! That’s right folks, it seems that the Vatican has released the Ten Commandments for drivers.

I wonder who the modern day Moses was who delivered these gems of wisdom to his holiness and his holy handlers. Perhaps a yard worker at Vatican City’s local scrap yard found them inscribed on the hood of one of the growing number of wrecked Enzo’s.

Prepare to be enlightened after the break

Coop visits So Cal Speed Shop open house

so-cal.jpg

I was pretty impressed with the quantity and quality of cars in attendance at a local cruise a couple of weeks ago, but that show pales when compared to an open house at the birth place of hot rodding. Coop took his bum leg and his Leica to the annual open house at the So Cal Speed Shop and took about a zillion photos. Visit Positive Ape Index and then follow through to Coop’s Flickr page.
