Another super busy week has come and gone here in The Garage and there has been some great stories and photos to go along with it. Right now though, I’m in front of the telly, where the Monaco GP is down to 8 laps left. I’m absolutely stunned by the camera quality. The new front wing cameras offer an unbelievable view of the speeds these cars travel at. It’s almost frightening. So now, let’s take our own hot lap around the blogosphere and see what happening.
Buying a used car can be a risky experience and most people have had at least one bad experience. Speaking from the depths of her wastebasket, Wenchypoo offers her thoughts on some things you can do to protect yourself and get the best deal. There is some good advice here, though I disagree with the Import vs Domestic comments. I think there is another post brewing there.

Car enthusiasts love concept cars. Journalists love concept cars. Chrysler loves to build concept cars! In fact they are dedicated to building the Coolest of Cool concept cars. In reality, every designer and every manufacturer thinks that their concepts are the coolest. Not every concept is a driver though and the Chrysler boys and girls try to make most of them runners. the even get them out on the road for journalists to have a go at. Not long ago, one lucky guy got to take the new Challenger down a drag strip!
It has been 20 years since Chrysler began taking this approach and they are pretty proud of some of those cars. Rightfully so, as a number of the cars on the list went on to production and a full model life. Viper, Prowler, Ram, Neon. These and more have been important to Chrysler fans all over, not to mention the company.

We had a few spare moments in the shop yesterday and I was trying to explain how cool the BMW M1 was to one of my techs who is a few years too young to have seen one on track. I found this in car video of Peter Heinrich from Zolder. Stunning.
Turn up the speakers!

Often, one expects a lot from a big event and less so from a smaller program. Sometimes though, the little guy blows the big guy out of the water! When I visited the launch of one of Toronto’s biggest racing events last month, I felt let down. No cars, no flash, no excitement. There has been so much going on lately that I almost backed out of last night’s launch party for the new Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship. What a mistake that would have been!

Well, it’s been a busy day so this will be a quick tease. I took the new camera to Remy’s in Toronto’s ritzy Yorkville area for the launch of the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship. I took a ton of photos, which I’ll try to get posted tomorrow. For now, have a peak after the break to see friend of The Garage Perry Ianuzzi with Katie the Castrol girl.

Gumball.
One word. Spoken by phone, or in person with the passing off of a chewy treat. The opening scene of the classic car flick burned itself into the psyche of this budding car phreak. That and the book Sunday Driver. Penned by Brock Yates, Sunday Driver told the tale of the first two Cannonball Baker Sea To Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash events. Of course Gumball was a blatant rip off of Cannonball and it sounds like Brock is still bitter. That is another topic for another day. Today’s topic is the evolution of the concept and it’s impact on legitimate, organized competition.
In his history of the Cannonball a few years ago, Yates discussed the fact that the Cannonball could not be recreated in today’s world. With the added traffic and our litigious society, a modern race could not exist. It would be irresponsible to run this type of event today. He commented on the race that had more or less stolen his name and continued to operate a media driven rally. He was less than flattering in his descriptions. Want the details? Buy the book, it’s wonderful.

This summer, Ford and Harley Davidson are kicking things up a notch with their new truck. The new 2007 F-150 Harley Davidson can be optioned with a twin screw Saleen supercharger, the same as the GT500 uses. A dual stage water to air intercooler keeps things cool and a free flowing exhaust adds the prerequisite growl. All this adds up to a whopping 450 hp and 500 pounds-feet of torque from the 5.4 liter V8.
Of course the styling includes 22 inch wheels, special striping and lots of chrome to create the Harley image. This is the ninth version of the Harley-Ford truck since the first one in 1999 and may well become the most sought after.

In car footage is always great, but this video from the 1954 LT Special of Sam Burg taken at the Chihuahua Express is killer. This gives you an idea of what real racing must have felt like in the Fifties, not to mention the sound of the beast.
