When Autocross Goes Bad

gt3-before.jpg

Anyone who’s been involved in any sort of motorsport knows that your bright sunny afternoon can go completely upside down in the blink of an eye. VW Vortex member Bandit27 took part in his first ever SCCA autocross over the weekend. He got to see what can happen first hand.

No, the pristine GT3 above isn’t Bandit27’s, but the picture is. The beast isn’t so pristine anymore.

Wanted: Race Car to Display at a School Open House

These days, whenever anyone has any race car questions, they often find their way to me. I guess that’s to be expected. The most recent request is turning out to be a bit more difficult than I thought it would be. We need a race car and driver to be put on display.

The event is a high school open house in Pickering, Ontario. It will be a good opportunity to show off your sponsors at a community event. As an added bonus, The Garage will be there to take some photos which will be scattered across the blogosphere, ensuring some quality eyeball time for the folks who pay for you to go racing.

Any takers? You can reach me though the comments page or by e-mail at

Tire Review: Nankang EX500

nankang.jpg

When you are a pro in any industry, you have certain views that can be hard to sway. One of those for me is off brand tires. The P5’s summer boots were pretty much finished, so I started making some calls. The first (and only really) was to Gord Cullen at Tire Depot.

The Dude Hits the Track For the First Time

dude-drives.jpg

The middle kid in The Garage, affectionately known as The Dude, took his first run at karting this afternoon. The boys and I spent the day at the Mosport Karting Academy track, watching some of the new trainees for the Canadian Rookie Karting Series. Following these sessions, it was time for The Dude to head out in one of the school karts.

Video: Mosport Camping in 1976

One thing about racing in the Seventies is that the spectators had a blast. Combine booze, weed and thousands of young people and you had a sort of automotive Sodom & Gomorrah. In many cases, camping was shut down at tracks because of the denizens of “The Pit” going wild.

Carnival of Cars: Edition #17

cow5.jpg

Spring finally seems to have arrived for real here in The Garage. Mamma G’s P5 has new summer boots, I’m cleaning out The Garage and today will be the 8 year old’s first time driving a go kart. On a track. I’m afraid. You’ll read more later about all 3 topics, but here’s a bit of a hint. We’re about to have our first ever contest in The Garage! For now though, grab a pail o java and let’s check out this week’s submissions to the CoW.

The Nextel Cup race in Texas last weekend was full of bumps and drama, and Brian from RaceDriven has the full scoop. One question though. Where the hell was Kyle Busch? Having a sit down with the latest Speed Sport News in the nearest porta john?

Snowrail Design Concept

snowrail.jpg

What do you get when you combine a Canadian, a design fanatic and a speed freak? Well, you get something that looks cool while it’s cruising across a frozen lake at speed. Ok, so I know it’s spring and we’ve finally broken 20 degrees Celsius, but we just had to show off the Snowrail.

Edmunds takes Challenger SS right up the Inside Line

challenger-ss.jpg

The moment that someone really grasps the emotion, feeling and even history that happens inside a race car is a thing of beauty. When one can convey that moment with words, it is truly special. That is what the lucky prick of the day, Josh Jaquot has done with his tale of the Challenger SS. The last few paragraphs almost brought me to tears. Yes, I’m a sucker for a good read, but you can almost feel what Josh felt when the beast lit up.

Chihuahua Express gets underway

coop-vette.JPG

The 2007 edition of the Chihuahua Express gets underway this morning, with a trip from Chihuahua City to Madera and back. Apparently the first stage is about 40 km, so the crews and their machines are starting with a real workout. The shot above is Coop’s ride this year and he’s got a ton of great paddock shots where this one came from.

Good luck everyone and be sure to drink lots of fluids!

Look another bald asshole in a Porsche!

That has to be one of the funniest lines I’ve heard in a long time. It came from the wife of business man turned TV host Kevin O’Leary upon hearing that he had bought a 2004 Porsche 911 C4S.
