Four wheelin wheel chair

April 23, 2006 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

superfourin.jpg

This may be the coolest mobility device ever! Engadget reported on this German developed off road wheel chair. This bad boy has fat tires, a hybrid engine and an on board computer. The computer combines GPS technology with medical monitoring equipment to allow people with disabilities go where they’ve never been before. Medial problems, such as a seizure or mechanical faults immediately triggers the transmission of an alert.

It’s just a matter of time before we start seeing these things on the trails. I can already envision upgraded tires and Warn winches.

My dad can beat your dad!

my-dad-can-beat-your-dad

I found this cool Sunoco ad in the program for the Mac’s Continental program from Mosport in September 1970. I think this pic of”Captain Nice” pretty much sums up the reputation Mark Donohue had. A family guy who also happened to be one of the best racers who ever lived.

The Mac’s Continental weekend featured Formula A, B & C. Formula A was for Formula 1 style cars with 5.0 liter V8 engines which grew into what most of us know as Formula 5000. The starting grid included names like David Hobbs, Dick Smothers (of Smothers Brothers fame), George Follmer and of course Captain Nice himself. Also of note are some of Canada’s most important drivers, Bill Brack, Horst Kroll, John Cannon and Ludwig Heimrath. Some American readers may remember his son, Ludwig Heirath Jr. who made a few failed attempts at the Indy 500 back in the Eighties.

MG “Smart” roadster

MG Roadster.jpg

Over at Planet Euro, they’re talking about this new MG roadster. It’s being built by an organization called The Kimber Group who are trying to resurrect the MG brand, using technology source from the Smart brand. While I applaude the effort, perhaps they could look back to the seventies & realize that this shape has already failed once. Make those headlights pop ups & you’d have an Opel, from this angle anyway.

Camaro concept is a driver!

April 21, 2006 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

Lucky Alex over at Noonzwheels was strolling along at the New York Auto Show, minding his own business when happened upon the new Camaro concept car. Even better, they were about to move the car & it seems that this concept is a real life car. As it rumbled it’s way through the show, Alex was lucky enough to snap a few shots & get some video. It’s a shame he wasn’t able to grab sound.

Great find Alex!

Cop drives into Rice Lake

April 20, 2006 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

The Toronto Sun posted the following story earlier this week:

A Northumberland OPP officer responding to an emergency early yesterday morning ended up on the receiving end of a rescue mission after he plunged his cruiser into Rice Lake.

Const. Kirt Finlayson was heading to a call for a distraught woman screaming in the Rice Lake area, north of Cobourg, just after midnight.

“A short time later our communications centre received a call from one of our units stating he had run into the lake with his car and was having trouble getting out of the vehicle,” said Sgt. Steve Grosjean.

The frantic call over the police radio — “I’m in the water and I can’t get out of my car” — were the only words heard over the radio from Finlayson after he drove off a boat launch at the end of County Rd. 18 and into the lake.

“It was very scary,” Grosjean said. “If you hear that someone has put their car in the water, they’re trapped and they can’t get out, it’s not a good feeling.”

Skid marks about 20 metres long led responding officers — Grosjean and Const. Kevin Finley — to the cruiser, which was about 40 metres offshore with its emergency lights still flashing under water.

Finlayson, who’s not a strong swimmer, was on the roof of the car, having escaped from the cruiser through a window. But even on the roof, he was chest-deep in water.

Grosjean and Finley pulled an aluminum boat from a nearby resort and broke two planks of wood to use as oars to paddle out to Finlayson.

Finlayson was treated at Northumberland Hills Hospital and released but Grosjean said he’s lucky to be alive.

“Anyone whose vehicle goes into a body of water in the dark at this time of year is lucky,” Grosjean said. “But the officer kept his cool and didn’t panic and I think that goes a long way.”

The incident is under investigation.

Ya think?

You’ve gotta ask…how fast was this knob going? 20 meters of skid marks?! 40 meters out into the lake! Off a boat launching ramp! Did he fail advanced driver’s ed?

Obvously the flashing lights were not made by Lucas!

Can Tiger be like Tony?

April 20, 2006 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

While Tiger Woods is in New Zealand next week for caddy Steve Williams’s wedding, he will be spending some time following in Tony Stewart’s footsteps.

Williams is apparently a long time modified saloon car racer and has been trying for some time to get his boss off the golf course and onto the race track. He will get his wish this Monday, when Tiger captains one of 2 5 man teams racing 12 laps for charity in high powered dirt track cars.

Maybe Tiger should have visited Tony for some instruction at Eldora first.

Racing season is here!

April 19, 2006 by Gary Grant 3 Comments

grid apr 16 06.jpg

Finally the warm weather has arrived and along with it comes the first lapping day of the season. On Sunday, Shelby and I packed the kart and all the associated gear into the back of the Xterra and headed up to Mosport. This was our first visit to the new Mosport International Karting Academy track and we were excited. We had heard a lot about the layout of the track, along with the healthy elevation changes. We did not race last year, so this was Shelby’s first time driving in a year & a half so the plan was to just get out and run as many laps as possible before having to head home for Easter dinner.

The first session saw it’s share of spins, due to a rusty driver and old, hard tires. Then she was gone. I could just see her head bobbing around over the hump of the esses leading into a left hand Monza curve. The chain had come off & she was moving the kart off to the side of the track. Dad was in trouble. After damn near killing myself pushing the kart back across the infield, I readjusted the chain and out she went for the next session.

Overall, the kart ran well all day and Shelby’s driving steadily improved as the day went on. The track looks great and Shelby had a blast driving it. She says she likes it better than the other tracks over at the Mosport Driver Development Track and she really likes those.

We are waiting for Glen Arnold over at Arnold Racing Engines to complete our new engine for the season and then we’ll be ready to roll. It’s looking like we’ll miss the first few races of the season, but then the points chase will be on.

Even more gas price woes

April 19, 2006 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

It never fails, I’m too lazy on the way home to stop for gas after a 12 hour day. This morning I arrived at the local Sunoco to find that the price has jumped by 13 cents a liter, to $1.09 per liter. Just unbelievable!

According to torontogasprices.com the high so far today is 110.8 but a guy on the radio saying he had seen it in Kitchener at 118.9 this morning.

Atomic Betty Rides!

April 17, 2006 by Gary Grant 2 Comments

As the new kart racing season was approaching, Miss Shelby was lucky enough to have her helmet sent out to be painted. Dan Kitching from Oracle Paint Works has worked on everything from helmets & goalie masks to guitars & motorcycles.

lid 2.jpg

Most recently, Kitching has gained International recognition for his work on David Aebischer‘s Team Switzerland goalie mask for the 2006 Winter Olympics.

For this project, Dan Kitching has taken Shelby’s vision of cartoon character Atomic Betty, along with the Canadian flag and brought it to life. The addition of some flames and shooting stars brings the ideas together, while the House of Kolor pearls glisten in the sunlight.

Blog Review – My Lotus Elise

April 17, 2006 by Gary Grant 2 Comments

rocky elise.jpg

As regular readers of The Garage may have noticed, I’ve developed a bit of a thing for the Lotus Elise. The traditional Lotus concept of light weight and modest power has always appealed to me. Combine that with a reliable, modern powerplant and you get an unbeatable package.

Today, I came across a super blog by a guy named Chris from Kentucky. My Lotus Elise follows Chris’ travels with his new Elise. The blog showcases Chris’ skill with a camera, showing his Elise in som fab locations including the infamous “Deal’s Gap” in North Carolina, reputed to be one of the best driving roads in North America. I’m looking forward to seeing where Chris shoots the Elise in the future.
